I recently picked up insights from Matt Dicks on storytelling, specifically his concept of Homework for Life.
Matt mentioned that he tracks his daily story moments using Excel. Since I prefer Google Sheets, I decided to set up my own tracker: a simple sheet with the date and a few sentences capturing the most story-worthy moment of each day.
I’ve been doing this for about four days now.
The main goal of Homework for Life is to build the habit of turning simple, everyday moments into actual stories. Over time, this builds a personal mind cabinet, a reservoir of real experiences you can draw from at a moment’s notice. Whether you are chatting with friends, meeting strangers, or trying to build rapport in a business conversation, having these moments logged allows you to share relatable stories about your life or frame everyday experiences in a way that truly connects.
In most cases, the more relatable the moment is, the better it lands.
Since I have just started this practice, my entries are currently simple logs written in basic sentences. My target now is to refine them so they naturally read like compelling, bite-sized stories.
